Ontaard

What lies beneath the clay? The un-earthing of a hill, the scooping, chopping, and scraping away of an ancient layer of sand, sometimes reveals a pyramid, a temple, a dolmen. Sometimes entire forgotten civilizations emerge. We speculate about the meaning of the discovery. How did people live then, why did their world disappear?
These questions and thoughts accompanied me as I played and built with chairs and polder clay. The haphazardly stacked chairs form the base of a hill, which was once earthed and is now being de-earthed by the influence of time, weather, and wind. It raises questions about the civilization beneath.
